Well, I have just been slammed with work in the past week and more. Its been quite a balance between trying to complete the official business tasks of organizing job advertisements, making calls, holding interviews and eventually trying to hire several workers with the jobs of continuing my work and actually taking in income. I just dont have time to do all of this myself and I’ve been, as I said, totally slammed.
Right now, I am actually in The Coffee Bean drinking an expensive cup of coffee ($3) and using their free internet. Normall I would not do this but I am waiting for JJ to finish her piano class, which is in a music shop inside of this mall at Zhongshan Park, a mini-downtown of sorts closest to my apartment.
Today, I had a horrible time with the internet. I have found in China that with many things, they dont have the sense of reliability that we have in the US. At about 1PM this afternoon, my Internet increasingly became slower and slower and slower. For any other person, this might seem like a minor inconvenience. But for a web programmer who primarily does projects in an online environment with high quality U.S. customers, it is a major problem. Not only is it costing me precious time, which I cannot afford during this extremely busy time, but it is deterring my own level of reliability here in China with my clients. It is difficult enough convincing them that the fact that I am China changes very little and my fees basically remain the same, but when this sort of thing happens, for over 3 hours of my day, god it makes me pissed.
Ok enough ranting, I am a little upset as you may notice. But the point I was trying to make is that if this sort of thing were to happen in the U.S, the customer would be pressing the Internet company to 1) FIX THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY and 2) REFUND MY TIME THAT I AM PAYING and 3) THREATEN TO FIND ANOTHER SERVICE. Well, those three actions would be a godsend. Instead, I cannot even contact the Internet company myself. I have to ask JJ or a friend to contact them for me. And the urgency is just not appreciated. It is as if this just happens and we move on and there is nothing that they can do to fix it. I just dont get it. I want the Internet service that this does not happen to but apparently that service does not exist in China. Anyway, now I’m serious, no more ranting.
In other news, I have been losing a little weight since I came to China. Wow, I gained so much weight in the U.S. in the eight or so months that I was their. Jesus. Which reminds me, because I weighed myself a few days ago when I went with Kevin to go swimming.
Swimming was pretty interesting, especially because I went to a place with Kevin that was pretty different from the other place I had gone swimming with JJ the first time I was in China. Instead, this place seemed more of a traditional / out-of-the-city / locals joint. The swimmers seemed to mostly be older men, at least fourty and above. And of course, the place itself was not the cleanest institution I’ve ever seen (but it was not horrible, like my old Chinese school was, brother Kevin can attest to that).
One of the things which was kind of funny was when we first entered. They have this strange custom of immense cleaning before you enter the pool. I know we have this too in the U.S., something like a quick rinse shower (I am not really an expert in US public swimming places). But I do not think that they absolutely make you do that and in the US, its definitely something that is not done by ALL swimmers. In this Chinese swimming place, everyone takes a shower, rinses off completely. Then to enter the swimming pool, you have to leave the shower room, walk through a stream of ice cold water, 1 foot deep, which its primary purpose is to clean your feet.
Of course, I have missed the most hilarious aspect of this swimming place, which was the actual SIZE of this locker room, where you changed into your swimming clothes. Now, please imagine a pretty good size, olympic swimming pool which was reasonably populated. Now imagine what a locker room would look like, half that size, half it again, and again, and again and that is the size of this place. It was just unbelievable. SOOOO small. And the best part is, as I said before, more of the occupants were middle-aged men, naked, changing, and more naked. It was impossible to even move without rubbing shoulders or touching feet with one another. And let me remind you, everyone is changing. Naked….. Pretty funny. The feeling of an old man’s ass is
